USMP FACULTY OF ODONTOLOGY, A REAL EXAMPLE OF ACADEMIC QUALITY
For twenty seven years already the USMP faculty of Odontology has been forming nationally and internationally renowned quality professionals specialized in the clinic practices. Dr. Carlos Cava Vergiú, its Dean, states that it is precisely that quality that in the last five years is at disposal of the students of the North Branch of this university.
Dr. Cava Vergiú, who was in Chiclayo developing academic activities, observed that the students of the USMP Faculty of Odontology, whether from the Central Venue of Lima or the North branch of Chiclayo, are academically formed with a high humanistic sense, looking for developing their professional abilities in order to put them at the service of the population.
“We are convinced that the university formation, while it is not supported by ethic values and social sense, is not good. We instill in our students that the professional preparation means more than just a few years at college as the real role of a professional is to get to know, research and train themselves in order to serve in a better way the one that needs it”, he said.
Modern Education
The USMP Faculty of Odontology has in Lima a population of 1 785 students and more than 280 in the North Branch. To this number we have to add approximately 100 professionals that have chosen our university in order to carry out their Post graduate studies in Odontology specialties duly accredited in order to guarantee an optimum education.
“Our faculty is equipped with the best surgical instruments that our country has. It has the most qualified professors, all of them with an international specialization formation, accredited and with a wide academic and practical knowledge. In addition, our students prepare themselves in the most modern educational infrastructure in Peru, and with the first level bibliography we have. All these things make us different form the rest”, stated the university authority.
Accrediting quality
The national and international accreditation is another of the strengths that the Faculty study plan has. Carlos Cava comments that nowadays the accreditation process is being done with one of the most prestigious institutions of Odontology of the World.
“There are two ways in which we are looking for the accreditation of our Faculty. The first is before the National Commission for University Evaluation and Accreditation- CONEAU, where we have already accomplished all the requirements for the national accreditation. The second channel is the COA, which is the accreditation wing of the American Dental Association, and also before the Latin American Accreditation Institute in Odontology – ILAO, which groups the countries of all the continent including Spain”, he explains.
Service Faculty
As it has been said before, the social sense is one of the main characteristics of the USMP Faculty of Odontology, which has received the Medal of the City of San Luis (Lima) for carrying out, together with its students and professors, one thousand free appointments in the population of the capital.
Cava Vergiú states that in our region- North Branch venue – the faculty has thought about doing a similar work, as their students are already giving free appointments to different sectors of the locality.
“Through the years of service, San Martin de Porres University has shown social sensitivity. The people that run the university thinks that only by instilling values, we can make our students better people”, he said.
Scientific formation
Regarding the research the students of the Faculty carry out constantly on the different dental problems that exist in the regional population, Carlos Cava Vergiú stated that this look for complementing the academic preparation of the university students.
“San Martin de Porres University is not unaware of this work. The researches carried out allow us to solve oral problems. Many of the theses that will be presented this year by our first class graduating from the Career of Odontology in the city of Chiclayo, will discuss the existing problematic situation in the city and will set solutions that can be applied from our university classrooms”, he pointed out.
The students of the Faculty of Odontology from the USMP North Branch have obtained several acknowledgements and awards for their research works. Some for example, for the posters presented in the last Odontology Congress, as well as in the last contests of table clinics and even in the invention of instruments, such as the LED lamp of homemade fabrication.
